अल्पायु में माता के निधन ने उन्हें अनाथ कर दिया। उन्हें भिक्षाटन करके जीवन-यापन करना पड़ा। धीरे-धीरे वह भगवान् श्रीराम की भक्‍त‌ि की ओर आकृष्‍ट हुए। हनुमानजी की कृपा से उन्हें राम-लक्ष्मण के साक्षात् दर्शन का सौभाग्य प्राप्‍त हुआ। इसके बाद उन्होंने ‘रामचरितमानस’ की रचना आरंभ की। ‘रामलला नहछू’; ‘जानकीमंगल’; ‘पार्वती मंगल’; ‘कवितावली’; ‘गीतावली’; ‘विनयपत्रिका’; ‘कृष्‍ण गीतावली’; ‘सतसई दोहावली’; ‘हनुमान बाहुक’ आदि उनके प्रसिद्ध ग्रंथ हैं।

रहीम अर्थात् अब्दुर्रहीम खानखाना को अधिकतर लोग कवि के रूप में जानते है; लेकिन कविता ने उनका दूसरा पक्ष आवृत कर लिया हो; ऐसा नहीं है। रहीम का व्यक्‍त‌ि‍त्व बहुआयामी था। एक ओर वे वीर योद्धा; सेनापति; चतुर राजनीतिज्ञ और कूटनीतिज्ञ थे तो दूसरी ओर कवि-हृदय; कविता-मर्मज्ञ; उदार चित्त; उत्कट दानी; मानवीयता आदि गुणों से ओत-प्रोत थे। रहीम का जीवन तीव्र घटनाक्रमों से भरा रहा। चार वर्ष की उम्र में पिता असमय बिछड़ गए। तीन पुत्र युवावस्‍था में ही एक-एक कर गुजर गए। एक धर्मपुत्र फहीम युद्ध में मारा गया।

सगुण भक्‍त‌ि-धारा के कृष्‍ण-भक्तों में मीराबाई का श्रेष्‍ठ स्‍थान है। वे श्रीकृष्‍ण को ईश्‍वर-तुल्य पूज्य ही नहीं; वरन् अपने पति-तुल्य मानती थीं। कहते हैं कि उन्होंने बाल्यावस्‍था में ही श्रीकृष्‍ण का वरण कर लिया था। माता-पिता ने यद्यपि उनका लौकिक विवाह भी किया; लेकिन उन्होंने पारलौकिक प्रेम को प्रश्रय दिया तथा पति का घर-बार त्यागकर जोगन बन गईं और गली-गली अपने इष्‍ट; अपने आराध्य; अपने वर श्रीकृष्‍ण को ढूँढ़ने लगीं। उन्होंने वृंदावन की गली-गली; घर-घर; बाग-बाग और पत्तों-पत्तों में गिरधर गोपाल को ढूँढ़ा; अंततः जब वे नहीं मिले तो द्वारिका चली गईं। मीराबाई ने अनेक लोकप्रिय पदों की रचना की। हालाँकि काव्य-रचना उनका उद‍्देश्य नहीं था।
